Pride is a celebration of where we’ve come from, but we can’t lose sight of how far we want to go.

Shameel, tell us a bit about yourself.

I moved to London from New Zealand a year ago without a job lined up. It was a bold step and one that’s helped me grow professionally and personally immensely. I now work in the Investment Bank’s client onboarding team, where I collaborate across teams to deliver a seamless experience for our clients.

What inspired you to get involved with the Pride and Allies network?

I’m one of the co-leads for communications and engagement. We focus on raising awareness and building a strong sense of community. The network is a place where people feel seen, supported and connected. For me, it’s been amazing way to meet others with shared experiences and values – people I can truly be myself around.

How is the Pride and Allies network creating impact within the workplace?

Right now, the network is focused on increasing visibility and encouraging more people to get involved. It’s a powerful space for building connections within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. We actively advocate for inclusion and work to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and supported in all aspects of their work life.

What role have allies played in your journey and why are they so important?

Allies are essential - they amplify our voices and help create safe spaces. Some of the most meaningful support I’ve received has come from colleagues who simply listened, learned, and stood beside me.

What advice would you give to someone considering a big career change?

Be bold and trust yourself. Take the time to reflect on what matters most to you – your values, your goals, and the kind of environment where you can thrive. Do your research into a company’s culture and ways of working to make sure they align with what you need to succeed. And don’t underestimate the power of community – connecting with others, whether through employee networks or informal conversations, can open.
